William W. Boyd was born and raised in California. He spent his professional life as a civil engineer.

During the 1980’s and 1990’s, Bill studied black and white photography at Palomar College and UCSD, San Diego. During this period he learned about light, shadows and composition. Bill built a dark room where he developed and printed his work. He earned numerous awards for his photography.

In 2003, Bill retired and moved to the Asheville, NC area with his wife, Martha. There, from his mountain-top studio, he took up oil painting durning the winter of 2004 at the age of 60.

Although primarily self taught, Bill has painted and/or studied with David McCaig, John Mac Kah, Tim Bell and Joe Bucci. His style incorporates expressionist, impressionist, and abstract styles from Europe and America. One gallery owner described his work as “abstract realism”. Bill likes experimenting with color, light and shape and takes inspiration from the beach, the mountains and from the works of  Wolf Kohn, and Egon Schiel. He knows that nothing is static and is looking forward to constantly modifying and expanding his work.
